Thank you for purchasing The RezEnabler™ Bass Drum Enhancement System!

We’ve included some info below to help you get started.

Setup, Tips & Tuning Tricks

These are the 5 factors that will greatly contribute to the success of your experience with the RezEnabler™ product.

  1. Installing the RezEnabler™

Please be aware when installing the flanges to the bass drum, the screws holding the tension casings will lose 1/8 inch of thread due to the thickness of the flange. On some models this might not be an issue, however, it is highly recommended for the purchaser to source out the correct screws and thread type 1/8 inch longer than the factory screws to secure the RezEnabler™. Rezenabler LLC is not responsible for any damage that may occur as a result of using the wrong screws, overtightening, etc. We have decided at this time not to include this part due to so many variables between manufacturers (just one of the major drum companies has 10 different tension casing screw lengths just for the bass drums in their product line alone). Most hardware stores will have the screws you need, take one out of the tension casing with you to verify the correct thread and length and add 1/8 inch to the length for the new screws.

There are a couple ways the RezEnabler™ system can be installed:

  1. Mount the flanges to the shell first, then attach the RezEnabler™ plate to the flanges. We have found this to be the most effective method as the alignment is taken care of before the plate is installed, simplifying the process.
  2. Mount the flanges to the RezEnabler™ plate, then install the entire system to the bass drum.

Hand tools are recommended (Phillips screwdriver, nutdriver, etc.) for installation,
as power tools may provide more torque than needed, possibly damaging the
screws.

Depending on the location of the plate in the bass drum to accommodate the pillow you are using, the flanges may mount to the front of the plate, instead of the rear, which is typical. Logo side goes towards the resonant head.

  1. Drumhead Selection

Although it is possible to get a desired effect with any head combination, we have found through extensive testing that a single ply head on the resonant side of the bass drum will produce the longest sustain time, dependent on tuning.

Since the RezEnabler™ system is designed to be used with a cushion or pillow, there is no benefit to using a pre-dampened head (dampening built into the head) on the batter side of the drum. Both single and double ply heads will work well with no pre-dampening.

  1. Dampening (use of pillow with RezEnabler™)

The amount of dampening the batter head receives has a direct effect on the amount of energy (sound pressure) sent to the resonant head. It can also influence the amount of low frequency response the batter head will produce. It is highly recommended to experiment with different amounts of dampening to suit your taste.

The type and size of pillow can also influence the sound of the batter head. A 14”x20”
pillow was used in our final testing. We have used both feather and foam filled pillows in
our testing with positive results.

At this time, we are not offering a pillow/ cushion as part of the RezEnabler™ system because of the many variables that exist in the marketplace and the personal preference that may come into play when choosing one (We may offer one as an option at a later date).

  1. Tuning

We have found when installing the RezEnabler™ in the bass drum, it is very important to get the sound of the batter head set (tuned and dampened to your preference) before putting the resonant head on. By doing this, you can then focus on optimizing the tuning and tone of the resonant side. There is an example of the batter head only being played in a video on our website to demonstrate this important setup tip.

Tuning the resonant head tighter will produce more of a note or pitch, while a looser or lower tuning will translate into more of a sustain effect with less emphasis on pitch.

For best results, a soft mallet is recommended for use during the tuning process.

  1. Mic choice & placement

To get the best results out of the RezEnabler™ system for live and studio use and to be able to mix the sound the RezEnabler™ produces with control over each head independently, an internal mic mounting system is recommended for the batter head. There are several great models available for sale online and not included with the RezEnabler™ system. The resonant head mic is usually placed on the outside of the drum, but could be internally mounted as well.

It is also possible to use the RezEnabler™ system with a hole in the resonant head if no internal micing system is available to enable a mic to be placed inside the bass drum through the hole while still placing a second mic on the outside of the drum facing the resonant head.

Most drummers, engineers (live & studio) and producers have a favorite bass drum mic (or 2), so mic choice is left to personal preference, although most models will produce good results. A subsonic capture device can also be used to bring out the low frequency characteristics of the resonant head as well.

Please experiment with mic placement to achieve the best capture of sound.

We are confident that with proper setup, the RezEnabler™ may very well be your next secret bass drum weapon!
